Observation Narrative
This plot is fairly typical of extensive seasonally flooded gum swamps occupying elongate, peat-filled swales between ancient dunes in the park. The habitat is flooded by 35-40 cm of water during much of the year but was completely dry at time of survey, which greatly facilitated survey and sampling. Large Nyssa biflora dominate the overstory, but relic knees indicate that Taxodium distichum was formerly associated. The understory is a dense complex of ericaceous shrubs (Lyonia ligustrina, Vaccinium fuscatum, Leucothoe racemosa), Smilax laurifolia, and occasional Arundinaria gigantea ssp. tecta. Carex joorii and a few other herbs grow on bases of Nyssa biflora.
